About daith piercings and daith earrings.
There are three main styles of earrings that can be used for Daith piercings.
First of all, and by far the most popular style of daith earrings are hoops, also known as huggies or rings. These come in a wide range of options, from simple round styles to heart-shaped hoops that make a real impact. You can even get ‘clickers’ that look just like a normal hoop but work on an easy-to-use hinge mechanism that makes changing out your Daith earrings easier, even in this sometimes tricky-to-reach area.
Another great style, if you would like to conceal your piercing, is a curved barbell, which is a singular bar made from metal, capped by a metal ball at each end. Curved barbells, shaped to properly hug the cartilage of the ear, are especially suitable for Daith piercings, just be sure to hit that sweet spot between tightening the end ball enough but not too much. Otherwise, it can be hard to unscrew them when it comes time for a change.
The last style suitable for a Daith piercing is known as a captive bead ring (CBR). These are simple circular rings with a single bead threaded on. CBRs provide a minimal look with just a hint of edge and so are perfect for those with a more boho or alternative styling.
What is the best metal to use?
Well, first of all, it's important to get the type of metal right, as well as the style of jewellery for Daith piercing. This is because Daith earrings go through the cartilage and not just the fleshy part of the ear. With that in mind metals that contain low amounts of nickel are best for long-term wear as these are likely to be less irritating to the surrounding areas.
To that end, look for metals like titanium and 14k or 18k gold, rather than surgical steel. Although for short-term wear and healed piercings you can be less stringent.
Daith piercings for migraine reflief
The daith piercings association with health is linked to the ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture. This is because it is believed that Daith piercings stimulate a particular pressure point in the ear that can relieve migraines.
Indeed, there is even some scientific evidence in this 2017 study that Daith piercings help relieve the symptoms of migraine sufferers. Although, the jury is still out as to whether this can be truly attributed to acupuncture or its placebo effect. Yet, the fact remains that many people report an improvement in migraine symptoms after getting a Daith piercing, which for anyone that suffers from these debilitating headaches can only be good news.
Did you know?
In 1992, Erik Dakota and his female Jewish client came up with a new form of body piercing through the fold of cartilage where the inner and outer ear meets the Daith piercing. Daith is actually pronounced ‘doth’ and named after the Hebrew word “da'at” which translates to 'knowledge' or 'the knowing'. This name came from the fact that Erik’s client thought he must have great knowledge to be able to successfully work out how to pierce this cartilage part of the ear.
